JAKARTA – Various studies state that Indonesia’s digital economy opportunities are still wide open. This is supported by a number of factors, such as the 4th largest total population in the world. The number of productive age population reached more than 191 million or 70.7 percent, supported by Generation Z as many as 75.49 million people, or 27.94 percent and Generation Y/Millennials which reached 69.90 million people or 25.87 percent.

In terms of digital users, the number of Indonesian mobile phone users currently reaches 345.3 million (125.6 percent of the total population). With internet penetration of 73.7 percent and internet traffic increasing by 15-20 percent throughout 2020. Even now, there has been a wave of new technologies such as 5G networks, IoT, blockchain, artificial intelligence and cloud computing.

The implementation of the 5G network will certainly be a solution in the future. Because, if there is no 5G network there will be concerns that arise about the services provided to customers. Where today digital technology has become the joints that drive community activities.

Although it is very much needed, the presence of 5G does not just exist. But it must deliver optimal 5G services. The readiness of the frequency spectrum for 5G must be prepared.

In addition to the spectrum, namely bandwidth. Bandwidth means a connecting network between BTS towers and central areas where the internet will be connected and this must be expanded by using a fiber optic network.

Secretary General of the Association of Telecommunications Providers throughout Indonesia (ATSI) Marwan O Baasir revealed that the availability of fiber optics is still limited and uneven, because most of them are concentrated in urban areas.

“For this reason, the role of the Ministry of Communication and Informatics must be optimized to help operators who are members of associations, so that local governments can relax their rules so that the process of deploying fiber optics can run easily so that they can support 5G development in the country,” said Marwan.

In addition, Marwan said, the ideal 5G is in the 3.5 giga herzt (GHz) frequency. Currently, operators use existing frequencies, so there are those who use 2.3 GHz, 2.1 GHz and so on. This is still possible with dynamic spectrum sharing.

“It’s still 5G, it only uses the existing spectrum, so the current bandwidth is still limited. So, we hope that 3.5 GHz can be fast,” said Marwan.
