Every day between 20 and 30 units of blood are required at the Almanzor Aguinaga Asenjo National Hospital (HNAAA) in Chiclayo for the care of people with different diseases and emergencies. 2021 has not been a good year for the blood bank of this hospital, as it has collected less than in previous periods, generating concern.
Speaking to La República, the head of the HNAAA blood bank, Juan Chapoñan Mendoza, explained that they currently have a deficit of blood units that puts the timely care of patients at risk. Before the pandemic, the service could receive up to 10.000 units per year, but during 2020 and 2021 there is evidence of a decrease in donors.
“This year, due to the pandemic, it is less (blood donation). We are with a deficit. We do not believe that we will reach that top (10,000 units per year). We are currently reporting about 6.000 units and there are only three months until the end of 2021. This hospital requires between 20 and 30 units per day, sometimes more ”, explained the person in charge.

Along these lines, Chapoñan Mendoza made a call to the population that is in the conditions of to give to approach this hospital to help patients who suffer from oncological diseases or suffer from accidents and require transfusions. He specified that a single donor can support up to three people, since blood, platelets and plasma can be obtained from each unit.
“Less than 1% of the Lambayecans are blood donors. Units are needed every day. It is only necessary to be a healthy person between the ages of 18 and 55 to donate blood. For more information they can come to the hospital and here they will be evaluated and oriented ”, he added.
Mothers promote donation
The mothers of 38 children with leukemia carried out this Saturday, October 23, a blood donation campaign outside the HNAAA. This is the second time they have held this kind of event in 2021 in order to collect units of blood for the treatment of their children. The parents asked the Chiclayanos to join in the voluntary donation.
