12 months Gorillas: The hyped on-demand delivery start-up takes stock

With ultra-fast delivery times, over 100 warehouses and more than 10,000 employees in eight stores, Gorillas has established itself as one of the leading online supermarkets in a short period of time. At the same time, it is criticized for poor working conditions.

The triumphant advance of online supermarkets continues – the Berlin company Gorillas, founded in 2020, is right at the forefront. Under the motto “Faster than you”, the Berlin start-up has achieved rapid growth.

2.5 million orders, delivery time 10.8 minutes

As reported by Gorillas, 2.5 million orders with an average delivery time of 10.8 minutes have been delivered in the last twelve months. The users of the app had access to more than 2000 groceries and everyday products at retail prices for a delivery fee of 1.80 euros. According to the company, the Gorilla Riders rode their bikes together a distance of over 200 times around the world. In the second quarter of 2021, the team also grew by 6,000 new employees.

Gorillas has been active in the German cities of Berlin, Bonn, Bremen, Dresden, Düsseldorf, Essen, Frankfurt am Main, Fürth, Hamburg, Hanover, Heidelberg, Karlsruhe, Cologne, Leipzig, Munich, Nuremberg, Offenbach am Main and Stuttgart since June 2021. Gorillas can also be found in England (London, Manchester, Cambridge, Nottingham, Southampton), France (Paris), Italy (Milan) and the Netherlands (Amsterdam, The Hague, Groningen, Haarlem, Leiden, Nijmegen, Rotterdam, Tilburg, Utrecht ), Spain and Belgium, and since the end of May 2021 in the USA (New York City).

“Exceptional 12 months”

“From building shelves in my living room to shipping 2.5 million gorillas orders in a year – it would be an understatement to say it’s been an exceptional 12 months,” says Gorilla CEO and Co-Founder Kağan Sümer. “None of this would have been possible without the central Gorillas communities: employees, customers, partners, suppliers and investors. Working with these strong partners, reaching the important milestones and building processes and systems for the future fills me with pride , Joy and curiosity about everything that the next year brings. “

However, the positive development was also clouded by less positive events: there were repeated protests and work stoppages on the part of the drivers. They criticize, among other things, fixed-term and insecure contracts, inadequate equipment and poor and late payment.

The employer side is at least outwardly cooperative. “The interests of our riders are important to us, and we take their feedback extremely seriously,” said the company on the occasion of the protest. “We expressly and unreservedly support the establishment of a works council at Gorillas and will of course provide all the necessary funds for this.”
