Pedro Manzano shows the restoration of the canvas ‘Exaltation of the Eucharist’ by Herrera el Viejo | Radio Sevilla | Present

After the Brotherhood of Vera-Cruz de Alcalá del Río, the headquarters of Sierpes del Mercantile Circle it will host an unpublished exhibition in which, before its final placement in the sacramental chapel of the church of San Vicente, the pictorial set of three canvases made between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, recently restored, will be able to be admired.

It will be the first time after his intervention that we will have the opportunity to admire these extraordinary works of art up close and in great detail, usually out of sight as they are located at a height of 9 meters. These works are the property of the Sacramental Arch Confraternity of the Seven Words and they are located on the entrance wall of the sacramental chapel. A set that forms a semicircle with a lowered arch, with a central painting representing an allegory about the Blessed Sacrament entitled “Exaltation of the Eucharist”, measuring 2 meters by 2 meters, a work dated and signed by Francisco de Herrera the Elder in 1641 and two other triangular-shaped canvases that top off the arch described above to the left and right, representing Jesus as the Good Shepherd, anonymous works from the mid-18th century and measuring 1.80 mx 1.25 m.

According to the data in the historical archive of the Brotherhood, during the remodeling works carried out in the chapel and which ended in 1782, these canvases were placed. The restoration of the works was completed in May 2021 under the direction of the restorer Pedro Manzano Beltran that, with their multidisciplinary team, they carried out the work “with extraordinary results, recovering, above all, in Herrera El Viejo’s painting, the color and splendor of the work as it was conceived by its author in 1641”, as explained from the Brotherhood of the Seven Words.

This intervention has been possible thanks to funding from Roberto Dominguez, president of the BST bank and of the Buen Pastor School of Seville represented by Joaquin Egea, two people very close to the corporation of Holy Wednesday, who contributed the necessary funds for its restoration. Given the importance of the work, the Museum of Fine Arts of Seville has exhibited the canvas of the “Exaltation of the Eucharist” by Francisco de Herrera el Viejo in a room as a guest work, from June 21 to September 19 of this same year. And one of the exhibition rooms of the Mercantile and Industrial Circle of Seville will have the opportunity to host the exhibition of the complete set of restored canvases, the central “Exaltation of the Eucharist” and the two lunettes dedicated to Jesus as the Good Shepherd, by mid-18th century, placed in the same way as they are in their original place.

The exhibition can be visited from Friday, September 24 to Sunday, October 3 on schedule from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., except on Sunday, October 3, which will be closed at 2:00 p.m. On Saturday, September 25, the exhibition will be closed during the morning for a concert.
