The migrant living in Medininkai has one request: I just want to hug my mother, but they don’t let me

Maria Kheri herself, running away from the abusive man, fled Iraq from Turkey back in 2014, where he was reaping the fruits.

Her family – parents and two brothers – successfully moved to Germany in 2016 and have lived there ever since.

“I have always looked forward to a good opportunity to go to Europe and find a better, safer life there,” Kheri said while examining her asylum application.

She was not granted asylum in Lithuania, it was decided that she was an economic migrant and had to be sent to her country of origin. True, she can still appeal this decision of the Migration Department.

However, Ms Kheri contacted the Delfi editorial office not because of asylum, but because she had not been allowed to meet her mother, who had not been seen in Medininkai for 5 years, but had stayed at the gate.

“I asked them to let me see my mother in Lithuania for at least 5 minutes, but they didn’t,” the girl wrote. “I just wanted to hug her.”

You can meet

Giedrius Mišutis, a representative of the State Border Guard Service, when asked about this situation, said that no one forbids meeting.

“There is a system in place that allows you to actually meet upon request. If, for example, a request were made today, those people could meet in a couple of days, he explained, adding. – When you arrive like this, fall from the sky, there is no opportunity to meet immediately. There is a certain regime in those territories and it is not possible to organize, check and examine that application immediately. “

According to him, even a few requests were received that day alone, and the flow of visitors is plentiful. Most visitors are relatives or friends already established in Western European countries.

VSAT According to the representative, most are aware of the procedure and apply before the trip, but there are also cases when visitors only find out about it when they arrive at the camp gate.

“It simply came to our notice then. There is a queue, it needs premises, it needs officials who assess the validity of the request, the aspect of trafficking in human beings is particularly valued, and all other security matters are checked, if any, are handed over. Formally, the application can be processed for up to 3 days, but as far as I know, it is never necessary, ”said G. Mišutis about the procedure.

Meetings, he said, last at least an hour. Officials do not stand behind them – people can communicate freely.

Asked about the specific situation, Mr Mišutis assured that Mr Kheri would be able to meet his mother this Friday.

After contacting the migrant again, she confirmed that the meeting would indeed take place, but said the situation was not ideal.

“Mom was waiting for me behind the fence, we were separated for 5 years and now we meet in that situation and only for an hour. Trust me, it hurts, ”she said.
