Opinion: We want more (and give us Bloodborne, please!)
Games are becoming more multi-platform friendly with crossplay and PC ports, a trend that has offered lots of goodies in recent months.
Whether it was the development years for the Xbox and PlayStation 2 for many or even further back to the Sega Nintendo battle in the early 1990s, the exclusivity of consoles has always hurt gamers who have been locked out of incredible experiences. Not all families could buy every console released in a generation and it always felt sad that many of us ended up having to choose one page.
Since Final Fantasy games were Nintendo’s and I liked a couple of exclusive PlayStation titles, my family’s money went to it, which means I missed a lot of great Sega and Xbox titles instead. I’m sure there are plenty of old Sega Genesis / MegaDrive veterans out there who will never know the sublime beauty of Final Fantasy VI and it’s a tragedy.
But fortunately, the old divisions now seem to be collapsing. With several exclusive PlayStation titles coming to PC, such as Death Stranding, Days Gone and Horizon Zero Dawn, which means that some of the best titles on Sony’s flagship consoles will also be some of the best PC games in the future. With the Xbox Series X release of the long-exclusive Sony MLB: The Show, as well as the launch of Day-One on the Xbox Game Pass, we’ve even seen a first-rate developer for Sony make a game for a rival console.
What does this mean in the future? Honestly, the walls have been broken down. After letting go of the exclusivity and allowing crossplay servers between different platforms, it feels unlikely that Microsoft and Sony would suddenly retreat to their walled gardens.
With the transition to digital downloads and streamed content, the physical production costs of developing an exclusive title are greatly reduced, so extending these exclusive titles to other platforms and expanding the market for your games just feels like the most economically sensible thing to do.
Does that mean we could see Kratos come to Xbox and Master Chief appear on PlayStation soon? Five years ago we had laughed out loud, but now? It may not happen in time for Halo Infinite, but it also does not seem to be completely impossible if we look further ahead.
Personally, I can not think of anything better. More of this please.
