This worries the health authorities before winter

The number of coronary patients in Norway has increased in the last week.

118 people are now admitted to Norwegian hospitals, where 29 are in intensive care units and 16 in respirators.

– It is especially in northern Norway that we are now seeing an increase. It may seem that the last major wave of infection we had in the south has now reached the north. This is an expression that we still have a somewhat unstable situation in the country, says subject director Frode Forland in FHI to TV 2.

He says there are two groups in particular that are now being admitted with disease related to the corona: elderly people who have been fully vaccinated and have underlying diseases, and unvaccinated over 45.

– It is not uncommon for us to see that when more people become infected, more people will also be admitted after the wave of infection. It is the University Hospital in Northern Norway that now takes the biggest burden, he says.

Unfortunate combination

What worries Forland somewhat, however, is that into the winter we can get several viruses that infect many at the same time.

– There is still not much pressure on the health service, even though those in northern Norway have increased preparedness. When we now eventually get a combination of increased influenza infection, corona infection and the RS virus, which is more common among children and young people, it can be an unfortunate situation, he says.

He therefore emphasizes that the flu vaccine is extra important this year.

– It is also important that those who are offered a third dose of corona vaccine, which is now over 65, take it. The best insurance against bee hospitalized with coronary heart disease is to take the vaccine, he says.

Chaos in the UK

In the UK, infection rates are now rising sharply. In the last 24 hours, 49,000 new cases of corona have been detected. The number of admissions has increased by 10 percent in one week, and is approaching 8,000 admissions.

– In the UK, they chose to open up society earlier, and they have a lower vaccination rate. Many vaccinated there have been vaccinated with AstraZeneca, which has been shown to be less effective, says Forland.

He has no immediate fear that we will see similar lists in Norway.

– I do not think we will get a similar infection increase, but the municipalities are ready to possibly increase preparedness if necessary. We are following the infection situation in other countries, and also in Russia and Latvia we have seen a large increase recently, he says.

He emphasizes that while England has now removed all restrictions, we still have some measures left in Norway.

– If you are diagnosed with corona, you must isolate yourself, you must carry out infection tracking among the nearest close contacts and if you are ill, you must stay at home. If this is followed, I have good faith that we will be able to maintain control through the winter, he says.
