Is that a debit or credit card? Payment cards will be replaced from 2023

Millions of debit cards in the Netherlands will be replaced from mid-2023. Both Mastercard and Visa are coming with new technology, which will change the Maestro and V Pay logos to those of Debit Mastercard and Visa Debit.

Debit cards are becoming more like credit cards due to this new technology, making them easier to use with online payments, reports Dutch Payments Association.

In a statement inform Mastercard to stop Maestro. The company ensures that cardholders do not have to do anything. As soon as the card expires after July 1, 2023, the bank will send a new debit card that works in the same way.

Maestro is the most widely used payment standard in the Netherlands. The current system works well for in-store checkout, but the technology wasn’t built for online payments. Even abroad, the card does not always do what it is supposed to do. The new debit card should change this.

Payment terminals

From next year there will already be payment terminals in the Netherlands that accept the new cards, in most cases this is a software update. This is because the passes are already being used in a number of other European countries, such as Germany and Belgium. Those cards will soon also be accepted in the Netherlands, which is nice for those cardholders.

ING says it is still investigating what this news means for ING and its customers.
