In the last week, the number of corona cases in the UK has increased drastically.
That prompted Sajid Javid, the country’s health minister, to convene a press conference on Wednesday night.
– We know that the winter months will be challenging and what we see now is the start of this, says the Minister of Health.
He then thanked the health service for their work through the pandemic, and says that the government will do what they can to prevent them from collapsing.
– This pandemic is not over, says the Minister of Health.
1000 hospital admissions daily
In the last 24 hours, 49,139 new cases of corona have been registered in the United Kingdom. 179 deaths have also been registered. Javid now fears that the number of cases of infection may increase sharply.
– The winter season creates perfect conditions, not only for covid, but also for other seasonal viruses.
The reason for this is lower temperatures, and that people stay indoors.
He then warns that the British may see 100,000 cases of corona daily.
According to Javid, it is also common with around 1000 hospital admissions daily as a result of the virus.
– The virus will continue to be with us for a long time and still be a threat, Javid continues.
– A race
Furthermore, the Minister of Health encourages those who have not yet taken the vaccine.
– We are in a race between the vaccine and the virus. Even though we are in the lead in this race, the distance will be shorter.
He then says that the authorities will do their part to contribute to this, at the same time as he asks the British to encourage their friends who have not taken the vaccine to take it.
– If we all play our part, then we can give ourselves the best chance in this race, and get through the winter, so that we can celebrate Christmas with our loved ones, says Javid.
Ingen «plan B»
Despite the concerns, Sajid will not introduce any “Plan B” at this time.
– The government is still preparing measures for all incidents. Whether we introduce the measures depends on the number of cases of infection, hospitalizations and deaths.
Finally, he reiterates the message that all Britons should take the vaccine.
– We have the doses, we just need the arms and put them in.
