Remscheid – On October 18, 2021, around 7:00 p.m., an 87-year-old woman handed cash and jewelry to an unknown perpetrator in a supermarket parking lot on Freiheitsstraße. The stranger then left via the adjacent stairs in the direction of Palmstrasse.
Previously, callers had reported to the couple in several phone calls in the afternoon and pretended to be from the police and the public prosecutor’s office. The son killed a woman in a car accident and now cash has to be deposited with the public prosecutor so that the son does not end up in jail.
The elderly woman then drove to banks to withdraw tens of thousands of euros in cash, and she also looked for cash and jewelry at home. During this time, the fraudster maintained telephone contact with the injured party.
The man who took the money in the supermarket parking lot is described as around 30 to 35 years old and corpulent with a plump, friendly face. He is about 1.70 m tall and at the time of the crime he had brown hair, no beard, a beige peaked cap, a dark sweater, dark trousers and a dark red quilted jacket.
Witnesses and whistleblowers are asked to report to the police on 0202/284 0.
At this point again the urgent appeal and the warning from the Wuppertal police:
– When calling the real police, 110 will NEVER appear in your phone display! – “Guess who’s it!” Caution! Grandchildren’s trick! Real family members report by name! Con artists let you guess! – If the wrong police ask for money or valuables: hang up IMMEDIATELY! – Don’t be questioned! The real police NEVER ask for account balance, bank / credit card details, passwords and PIN. – If you are asked to dial 110 while the call is in progress or to allow the caller to put you through 110: Hang up immediately! – Be sure to wait for the dial tone. Choose 110 yourself! – Do not let strangers into your apartment! – NEVER give money or valuables to strangers! – Did you become a victim? Inform the police IMMEDIATELY!
The police also ask relatives or loved ones to talk to older people about the various methods used by con artists. (jb)
