Juan Pablo Bonilla, director of photography, at Escuela de Cine UFM

Juan Pablo Bonilla is director of photography Colombian and visited for the first time School of Film and Visual Arts from Francisco Marroquín University, to teach the Second-year Cinematographic Lighting Design course and World of Cinema to third-year students.

During his visit he gave the Master Class: Direction of photography for film and TV for students of the program and for people interested in learning about the subject. It aimed to know and understand in depth the appropriate use of the tools that are involved in the photographic exhibition for the cinema, as fundamental narrative tools for the construction of an audiovisual discourse.

Is he deep knowledge of the exhibition what protects a certain photographic style, necessary and required in each project. The reason for being and understanding these instruments as an integral part of the narrative are the reason for being of this «master class», Juan Pablo Bonilla said.

What’s more, shared about his work at various events, such as the Film Talk: The Art of Photography Direction and the UFM Entrepreneur Artist: The Role of the Director of Photography, to discuss his professional career in the role of photography direction for different projects. Fernando Franco, entrepreneur, professor and academic coordinator of the UFM Film School participated in the conversation.

The main tool that one as a photographer always has at hand is what I call the boss, which is the sun, or natural light, so we decided from the beginning to work the entire film with natural light, explained Bonilla

The team of the School of Cinema and Visual Arts organizes a series of events and activities with visiting professors, with the aim of providing students learning experiences that allow them to learn from their work and trajectory, as well as provide them with a perspective of the global film industry.

Juan Pablo Bonilla has participated in short and feature films, both documentaries and fiction, TV series, advertising films and web series as a cinematographer in Colombia and Mexico. In 2019 he was the winner as best cinematographer short film, at the Puracé Awards of the Popayán Short Film Festival. Many of the projects in which he has participated have been winners of prizes, recognitions and nominations in festivals and national and international exhibitions, among which stand out productions with awards from the Colombian Development Fund on several occasions; the Clermont-Ferrand in 2019; the India Catalina Awards and the Guadalajara Film Festival in 2018; the International Light Show in 2012; among others.
