Every October 19, the International Breast Cancer Day. It is a date that seeks to sensitize and make people aware of the importance of having a regular breast exam, in order to detect any signs or abnormalities. It is also intended to be a reminder of the commitment of society supporting this disease.
According to data from the World Health Organization, breast cancer represents 16% of all cancers in female patients, being the most frequent malignant tumor in the population among women.
In Spain around 25,000 new cases are diagnosed each year. It is estimated that 1 in 8 women you will have breast cancer throughout your life. And this significant figure it is the main reason why women should have their breasts evaluated regularly. “Early detection has a 90% therapeutic success. For this reason, self-examination and mammography are also essential from the age of 40, or earlier if there are risk factors ”, explains the Dr. Raquel Saez, team surgeon Surgical Surgeons.
Associations and groups from all over the world celebrate this day with the symbol of a pink ribbon, carrying out activities of all kinds with the aim of raising awareness throughout society about the importance of preventing this type of cancer.
SURGICAL joins this celebration and recommends that all women carry out the necessary controls provided for by the health of each country, and in general maintain a healthy and balanced diet as well as physical exercise, factors that considerably reduce the risk of suffering from this type of cancer and, in general, any cancer. “The first thing you should do this day is Perform a breast evaluation yourself. If at any time you find a lump in the breast or any strange discoloration or redness, you should go to the doctor who specializes in breast pathology to perform a mammogram or breast ultrasound. Remember, prevention is key ”, affirms the Dra. Saez.
