80 percent of breast cancer patients are vaccinated against COVID-19

Guatemala City, Oct 18 (AGN) .- Authorities of the General Hospital San Juan de Dios reported that 80 percent of breast cancer patients are already vaccinated against the coronavirus (COVID-19).

Karla Lopez, Acting Head of the Oncology Area of ​​that hospital, indicated that the vaccination was achieved thanks to a campaign promoted with breast cancer patients nationwide.

Awareness campaign

The specialist reported that during the COVID-19 pandemic, care in this health area continued on a regular basis, always under sanitary measures to avoid infections.

Likewise, a campaign was carried out to support the National Vaccination Plan against COVID-19 with all the patients in the hospital’s oncology area.

Zero deaths

López said that since March 13, 2020, when the first positive case of COVID-19 was registered in the country, there have been no deaths from the virus suffering from breast cancer.

We have had breast cancer patients with COVID-19, but thanks to vaccination the disease has been mild. We have not registered deaths from this cause, he pointed.

Currently, in Guatemala 1 in 10 patients suffer from breast cancer. The average age is between 25 and 40 years.

Vaccination

According to records from the Ministry of Public Health and Social Assistance, until October 17 of this year the following have been immunized:

  • 5 million 47 thousand 669 people with the first dose
  • 2 million 988 thousand 941 with complete scheme
  • 8 million 54 thousand 936 doses administered
