Every year almost 8,000 people are injured in road traffic in Styria alone, more than 1,000 of them seriously. Many of them then need one thing above all – blood and quickly. But it is not only road traffic accident victims who depend on life-saving blood donations. Whenever blood flows, it must be replaced. Our organism does this by itself to a small extent. However, if the blood loss becomes too high, the system in our body threatens to collapse and we need outside help. A single complicated operation can require up to 40 blood units! If you consider that a blood supply contains 450 milliliters of the vital oxygen carrier, it quickly becomes clear how indispensable blood donation is.
Direct help from person to person
However, blood reserves are not only essential for risky treatments. Because: Even with every surgical procedure, no matter how small, blood donations are made available for the safety of the patient and modern cancer therapy would also be inconceivable without blood donations. Blood is an indispensable drug that in no case can be produced artificially. Whoever needs blood needs another person’s blood. Anyone who donates blood helps directly and directly to a person in need.
Throughout Styria, around 50,000 blood products are required annually to supply the population. Three acceptance teams from the Styrian Red Cross are on duty around the clock every day to meet the great need for blood as an emergency medicine. An undertaking that can only be accomplished with the active help of the population.
Life-saving blood can be donated in just half an hour. Do you have half an hour?
