More restore points for old electronic devices in cri…

There will be more restore points for old electronic devices in thrift shops. Flemish Minister of Economy Hilde Crevits will collaborate with, among others, the umbrella organization of thrift shops, Recupel and electronics chain Vanden Borre.

Crevits wants to reduce the ecological impact of electronic waste in Flanders by putting more effort into restoring old electronic devices. Because of their social and sustainable character, Flemish thrift shops are the ideal partner for this, she believes.

In a first phase, the project focuses on more repair places in the thrift shops in South-West Flanders, South-East Flanders, the Ghent region and East Brabant. An expansion to the whole of Flanders is planned at a later stage.

The project must also have a positive impact on the labor market. The workforce in thrift shops mainly consists of people with a greater distance from the labor market, for example due to a work disability. Through training, they get extra opportunities to move on to the regular labor market.

The Flemish thrift shops employ more than 4,000 people in the social economy.
