Paul had had a rough life with a lot of drugs and alcohol. He has stopped using drugs in recent years. “He died as a result of an eventful life. His body was exhausted,” said Marlies. Blanca is buried privately.

In the 1980s, Paul was part of the Amsterdam artist scene, which also included Rob Scholte, Joost Zwagerman, Koos Dalstra and Peter Klashorst. Paul broke through with self-portraits and provocative photos.
