At least 40 people have died and 18 are still missing as a result of the landslides and floods caused by the passage of the Kompasu storm through the Philippine archipelago, according to the latest balance published by the National Council for Risk Reduction and Disaster Management of the Philippines .
More than 43,000 people have had to flee their homes due to the storm and there are 7,399 homes damaged. The area most affected by fatalities is the province of Ilocos Sur, where there have been flash floods. There are 14 dead and five missing people.
In the neighboring province of Benguet there are nine deaths, most of them due to landslides. In Pangasinan there are seven deaths in mudslides, although there are also cases of electrocution and drowning. Five deaths add up to the province of Las Paraguas (Palawan) and the other five are deceased from Ilocos Norte, Cagayán and La Unión.
Damage to agriculture and infrastructure is estimated at more than 3,220 million pesos. The Philippines is battered each year by some 20 tropical storms, the most serious of which was Typhoon Haiyan, which killed more than 6,300 people and left more than four million homeless in November. 2013.
