Myanmar Military Junta Disappointed Not Invited to ASEAN Summit

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Military Spokesperson Myanmar, Zaw Mintun, accused foreign interference after his party was not invited in KTT ASEAN which will take place on October 26-28.

“Foreign intervention can also be seen here. We know that several envoys from a number of countries met with foreign envoys from the United States and received pressure from the European Union,” he told BBC, which is quoted Reuters, Sunday (17/10).

In his official statement, he said, ASEAN’s decision was against the long-standing principle of consensus.

“Myanmar is very disappointed and strongly objected to the outcome of the emergency meeting of the Foreign Ministers [ASEAN],” the statement said.

Furthermore, he also said that the decision not to invite Myanmar’s representatives without consensus is against the aims and principles of ASEAN.

Previously, on Friday (13/10), the ASEAN Foreign Ministers held an emergency meeting to discuss the presence of the Myanmar military junta in this October summit.

ASEAN will only invite non-political representatives from Myanmar to the summit.

“Several ASEAN member countries have recommended that ASEAN give Myanmar space to restore its internal affairs and return to normalcy,” said Brunei Darussalam as chairman.

Several countries are said to have accepted the request of Myanmar’s shadow government, the Government of National Unity (NUG) to attend the summit.

However, it is not yet known who will attend the meeting.

They also agreed not to invite the leader of Myanmar’s military junta, Min Aung Hlaing. The reason is that the junta is considered not to have made progress in dealing with the humanitarian and political crisis in Myanmar, as stated in the five consensus agreements agreed in Jakarta last April.

The five consensus are that the violence in Myanmar must stop immediately, there must be a constructive dialogue to find a peaceful solution, ASEAN will facilitate mediation, ASEAN will provide humanitarian assistance through the AHA Center, and there will be a special ASEAN envoy to Myanmar.

Long before that consensus, Myanmar was in turmoil after the military toppled the legitimate government on February 1.

They later arrested officials, including state adviser, who is also the leader of the National League for Democracy (NLD) party, Aung San Suu Kyi.

Not only state officials, the junta also arrested anyone who opposed his rule. They don’t even hesitate to kill.

The Myanmar people’s resistance emerged. Starting from the movement of civil disobedience to the formation of a people’s militia with minimal weapons.

The condition of Myanmar continues to be in the international spotlight because of the many victims who fell and the condition of the country is considered unstable.

So far, according to a report by the Association for Assistance to Political Prisoners (AAPP), the total death toll since the coup stands at 1,178 and 9,028 people have been arrested by the junta.
