Calexico is a border town, straddling the United States and Mexico. It is therefore not surprising to find, in the music of the duo formed by Joey Burns and John Convertino – formerly of Giant Sand, Latin influences mixing cumbia, mariachi and tex-mex. Since 1996, Calexico records have been floating in the Arizona desert, often recounting stories of travel and origins. The duo is inspired by world music and its collaborations, with Sam Beam (Iron & Wine), Douglas McCombs (Tortoise), Neko Case … to offer relaxing themes halfway between American country and Mexican energy.
