The film “I was born Rosellini” is a unique meeting place of world cinema history and Latvian contemporary filmmakers – the documentary film was produced by the studio “VFS Films” on the Latvian side. The film, which premiered at Venice International Film Critics’ Week last year, offers self-ironic documentary cinema and “therapy” for the Rosselin branch. Its main patient is the director of the film, Alessandro, the grandson of the famous Italian filmmaker Roberto Rosellini (1906–1977), who was also present at the opening of the festival and the Latvian premiere of the film, as well as met with the audience a day later.
In turn Riga IFF will last from October 14 to 24, offering more than 100 films in 10 thematic sections, including competitions – this time the film festival will take place not only in Riga IFF “home”, cinema “Splendid Palace” and the National Library of Latvia, but also in Madona, Valmiera and online throughout Latvia.
This year’s Riga IFF slogan, “Time is always”, reflects both the reflections of the festival’s creators and the game characteristic of the film format itself, with the seemingly most difficult constant to define.
“Time is a cause and time is a promise – a time that does not wait and a time that does not pass. Time is infinite and time is always too little. Such a paradoxical law of timelessness. Time for cinema. Time for conversation. Time to wake up. Time to run. Time goes by. Time passes. Time can be empty and it can be filled. Cinema can stop, slow down, delay time, it can tell and explain time, but it never runs out, “says festival director Liene Treimane.
Riga IFF face-to-face sessions and events take place at the green security level set by the Cabinet of Ministers. They can only be accessed with: an interoperable EU digital certificate for Covid-19 vaccination or disease (with a QR code) and a valid identity card (passport or eID). Document inspection will be performed at the entrance to the event venues.
