Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) revealed that currently all business lines must begin to adapt to their business models and technology, especially in the midst of the current Covid-19 pandemic situation.
This was conveyed by Jokowi when giving directions to the President Director of BUMN in West Manggarai Regency, which was broadcast on the Presidential Secretariat Youtube, Saturday (16/10/2021).
Jokowi said that currently several SOEs have adapted to new business capital and technology. But, said Jokowi, while the various SOEs have managed to adapt, infrastructure SOEs are still running in place.
“Adaptation to the new business model and technology. Some have entered there, adapt quickly. Banking, the banks have entered there, Telkom, Telkomsel. Others have not. Sorry, infrastructure BUMN, not transportation,” said Jokowi.
Therefore, the fastest way to adapt to the times, which must come first is to adapt. After adapting, the fastest way to develop a business model is to engage multinational companies.
“The best global companies, invite them, they will want to be with us. We have assessed the prospects for the future, in 10-20 years we will become the world’s fourth largest economy. Who doesn’t want it, everyone wants it,” said Jokowi.
Jokowi also asked that every state-owned infrastructure company be given an assignment, such as building toll roads, to carefully calculate its economic value. Because BUMN as a state company, the social impact must be calculated, so that the state has a calculation as to what its growth will look like in the future.
“Don’t let it happen again because of government assignments. I can give an assignment, here’s the assignment to build a toll road. But yes, it’s calculated. There is a calculation, and I was told, this is the IRR, the internal recovery return is that much, we need an injection from the state budget.”
“Don’t just get a scramble assignment, there’s no calculation because of the assignment, then take a short-term loan. Even though the infrastructure is for the long term. It’s been nowhere to be found,” said Jokowi.
Jokowi explicitly asked the leaders of SOEs to wisely calculate all developments under their responsibility. The ancient culture that can destroy state-owned businesses, is asked to be abandoned.
“It’s your job to calculate if there is an assignment. If it’s not logical, make a logical calculation. This is what the previous cultures left behind. Because now business transformation, technology adaptation has become a necessity, you can’t help it,” he said.
