With his portrayal of the US President, in which he deliberately exaggerated Trump’s linguistic peculiarities and his hand movements, Baldwin helped “Saturday Night Live” to achieve record ratings. Baldwin’s colleague Kate McKinnon, who played Trump’s Democratic rival Hillary Clinton during the US presidential campaign, also received an Emmy.
The US actor John Lithgow was also honored for a role in politics. He received the Emmy for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for his portrayal of the legendary British Prime Minister Winston Churchill in the Netflix political drama “The Crown”. Lithgow praised Churchill as a true role model in his acceptance speech: “In these crazy times, his life even as an old man reminds us of what decisiveness and courage really look like in a government.”
The top favorites at the Emmys were the series “Westworld” and “Saturday Night Live”, which combined science fiction and westerns. The hugely popular fantasy series “Game of Thrones”, which had dominated the Emmys in recent years, was not in the running this time. Her new episodes came too late for the award ceremony.
