On Friday, October 15, the annual foreign policy and security forum “Riga Conference 2021” started at the National Library of Latvia (LNL), bringing together political and security experts from various countries.

The conference takes place from October 15 to 16 and this year is dedicated to such topics as NATO the future, European Union loma, Afghan a Belarus impact of events as well as other topics.

The conference was opened by the Prime Minister of Latvia on Friday Krišjānis Kariņš, Prime Minister of Estonia Kaja Kallas. The conference participants were also addressed via video YEAR Secretary-General Antoniu Guteresre.

The panel discussed “What is stopping Europe from becoming a truly global player” opened the conference.

Since 2006, the Riga Conference has become one of the most important forums for security and foreign policy issues in the Baltic Sea Region. The conference provides an opportunity for stakeholders to identify current trends and engage in dialogue on global processes.

This year, the participants of the conference discuss the most topical issues of foreign and security policy, such as the impact of the events in Afghanistan on international security, the rivalry between China and the United States, and the political situation in Belarus.

Also this year, topics such as the NATO 2030 agenda, the EU Green Course, regional and global security, data security and much more are discussed. In parallel with the conference’s framework program, five separate discussions are organized, discussing the role of women in restoring post-conflict stability, security in the Baltic Sea region, the topicality of the Three Seas Initiative, as well as other topics. Although it was initially planned to host several hundred conference participants and media representatives, due to the deterioration of the epidemiological situation caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, it was decided to significantly reduce the number of participants and cancel any public gatherings, leaving only working discussions at the Latvian National Library.

The conference is organized by the “Latvian Transatlantic Organization” in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Latvia and the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Latvia. The conference’s partner organizations are NATO’s Public Diplomacy Division and the Konrad Adenauer Foundation in the Baltic States.
