Ajax rejected transfer request: ‘I was angry for a while’

Edson Álvarez is undisputed in the midfield of Ajax, but has come a long way: the Mexican submitted a transfer request less than a year ago. It did not come from a departure from Amsterdam.

Álvarez was open to Valencia’s interest, but Ajax refused to cooperate. “I was angry for a while,” he confesses in conversation with Ajax Life. “Yet I had to respect the decision and somehow the decision gave me a good feeling. There was confidence. Ajax needed me.”

Not much later, Álvarez turned out to be a permanent fixture. “Yet I still don’t feel like a basic player. I’ve been sitting on the bench too much for that. It doesn’t matter. I want to have the feeling that I have to hunt for a basic place, so I stay sharp and alert. That is necessary in our selection “We have a lot of good players. If you don’t pay attention for one moment, you lose your starting spot.”

Álvarez, who was also in the concrete interest of Stade Rennes during the summer break, is playing everything at Ajax this season. He may be on the bench for the first time against sc Heerenveen on Saturday because of his international obligations with Mexico.
