Kenyan police arrested the main suspect in the murder of athlete Agnes Tirop, her husband, who was on the run and was detained in Mombasa.
“The sooner we get him to reveal the circumstances that led to the girl’s murder, the better for all of us,” said George Kinote, director of criminal investigations in the African country.
On Wednesday, the 25-year-old, bronze medalist in the 10,000 meters at the 2017 and 2019 World Cups, was found dead at home, allegedly stabbed by her spouse.
“The suspect was arrested in Mombasa. He is being held and was arrested while fleeing,” added the police officer, and the suspect is expected to appear in court this Friday.
Tirop, who in Tokyo2020 was fourth at 5,000 meters, was found dead in Iten, a high-altitude city in western Kenya where many long-distance athletes train.
According to authorities, Emmanuel Rotich called his parents realizing that he had done “something wrong”.
Agnes Tirop’s career soared when the Kenyan athlete won the world cross-country title in 2015, aged 19, becoming the second youngest champion of all time.
