In the Senegalese village of Yonti, the Iman Tierno keeps his community together by taking care of spiritual cohesion. But the village’s peace threatens when his daughter becomes engaged to the son of his estranged brother Ousmane. Tierno is wary of Ousmane because of his ties to an extremist Sheikh and his desire for power. As a result of the engagement, a struggle develops between the siblings and the fundamentalist movement. Tierno tries to hold his family and the village together through his spiritual guidance to protect everyone from religious upheaval. However, the sheikh’s regulations quickly prevailed, so that the villagers have to fear violence and control. The excellent debut film by director Mamadou Dia plays with the power factors that lie behind the structures of family, religion and society.
