Cleaned environmental sculpture for Riga 800 :: Dienas Bizness

The retail company “Lidl Latvija” has signed an agreement with the Latvian company “VentEko” and the British company “ATG group” for the implementation of a polluted groundwater remediation project in Riga, Sarkandaugava, Duntes Street 25, where the company plans to build a new “Lidl” store.

Rehabilitation works at the facility will begin as early as next week and are scheduled to be completed by the end of November this year. The total investment of “Lidl Latvija” in this project of improving the quality of the city’s environment will approach 800,000 euros.

“Sustainability and care for the environment is one of Lidl’s core values, so we are pleased to announce today the launch of this remediation project. I am convinced that all residents of the Sarkandaugava area will only benefit from this project, which aims to eliminate negative industrial pollution improving the state of the environment in this area, “says Mikus Ķīsis, Head of Real Estate at Lidl Latvija.

“Our center developed a hydrogeological model for the site at 25 Duntes Street and its surroundings. The model includes information from previous geological research, cartographic material on construction, data on boreholes in the area, digital relief, as well as separate maps from our own Latvian hydrogeological model LAMO. can simulate different scenarios: pollution flow in a given period of time, installation of engineering structures, such as burial wall excavation, construction of pumping boreholes, pollution excavation. “, which is an innovative solution in Latvia,” says Kaspars Krauklis, a researcher at the RTU Environmental Modeling Center.

As a result of the research performed by RTU specialists, it has been concluded that in the territory of the object, which is an area of 150 m x 90 m, the upper part of the groundwater horizon is polluted in the whole area. It has been established that the pollution continues to leach into the groundwater and migrates to the Sarkandaugava canal. As up to 28,900 cubic meters of soil is exposed to oil hydrocarbon pollution, its excavation is not a practically possible solution, taking into account the depth and extent of soil pollution, as well as the lack of suitable sites for its further utilization in Latvia. Therefore, the solution recommended by RTU specialists was accepted as the most appropriate.

The State Environmental Service points out that “currently in Latvia the list of polluted and potentially polluted sites includes more than 3,500 different sites and territories. Dunte 25 is one of them. In order to start the construction process in such an area, analysis, various possible technological solutions must be analyzed in order to identify the most appropriate for the remediation of the specific site. Information on the state of remediation will be provided in 2006. Responsible implementation of all these steps will create a basis for the remediation of the site to achieve its goal and be able to return to economic circulation. “

During the rehabilitation project, ATG group specialists will create a special impermeable wall along the southern and western borders of the territory, 128 meters long and 8.5 meters deep. In the south-western part of the territory, along the primary groundwater flow path, a permeable filter wall will be installed at a length of 52 meters and a depth of 8.5 meters.

Due to the high groundwater level and unstable soil conditions, the walls are planned to be installed with a special method of soil mixing created by the “ATG group”, using spiral drills to form a barrier wall. The method developed by ATG group specialists uses reagents that can be shown to inhibit the migration of dissolved metals and help reduce pollution concentrations that reach the Sarkandaugava canal.
