Cheese and a could be a perfect match for each other. However, this pair of two is not new to meet in modern times.
In fact, according to the study, this cheese-beer pairing illustrates how deep his cultural roots are in Europe. The habit of eating cheese and beer has actually started 2,700 years ago.
The scientists made the discovery by analyzing samples of human feces found in the heart of the Hallstatt mine in the Austrian Alps. The study was published in the journal Current Biology on Wednesday.
Citing AFP, Frank Maixner, a microbiologist at the Eurac Research Institute in Bolzano, Italy and the report’s lead author, said he was surprised to learn that salt miners more than two millennia ago were advanced enough to ferment food.
“It’s very sophisticated in my opinion,” Maixner told AFP.
“This was something I didn’t expect at the time.”
The findings are said to be the earliest evidence (to date) of cheese ripening in Europe, according to the researchers. It’s different with beer. Alcohol consumption is well documented in old writings and archaeological evidence, the excrement of salt miners contains the first molecular evidence of beer consumption on the continent at that time.
“It is becoming increasingly clear that not only sophisticated prehistoric culinary practices, but also that complex processed food ingredients and fermentation techniques have played an important role in our early food history,” said Kerstin Kowarik of the Vienna Museum of Natural History.
