Lecturer Alliance Presidium Representative UNJ, Ubedilah Badrun revealed one of the reasons his party refused to reapply the honorary title honorary doktor from UNJ for the Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia Ma’ruf Amin because the idea of the number two person in Indonesia regarding the agreement state is not original.
Ma’ruf’s idea of a contract state or social contract called Ubedillah is not new. The idea has been around since the 17th century.
“Besides this idea is not original because it has been put forward by classical thinkers since the 17th century through social contract theory, in our records Ma’ruf Amin also has a special note on the issue of identity politics in Jakarta in 2017 which actually contradicts the social contract theory,” Ubedillah said to CNNIndonesia.com, Wednesday (13/10).
Ma’ruf often expresses his ideas about Indonesia’s status as a treaty country or from mitsaq in his speeches. He considered that the caliphate system could not enter Indonesia not because it was rejected, but because there was an agreement from the nation’s founders regarding the unitary state system.
Furthermore, Ubed said there were three other reasons that his party refused to grant the title to Ma’ruf and the Minister of SOEs Erick Thohir.
First, Ubed assessed that awarding honoris causa doctorates to figures who are in power and holding public positions has the potential to threaten the autonomy of universities and academic freedom.
In addition, according to him, the awarding of the title can also damage the academic morals of the university. The rules are also clear in the 2021 UNJ Honorary Doctorate Award Guidelines Chapter on Requirements.
Ubed said that in paragraph 3 it has been regulated that the awarding of an honoris causa doctorate is not given by UNJ to anyone who is currently serving in the government.
“It is dangerous if the rector and professors who are esteemed as members of the university senate violate the code of ethics of their own guidelines,” said Ubed.
The second reason, Ubed said that the proposal to grant honoris causa doctorate degrees to state officials was counterproductive to efforts to restore the good name of the UNJ institution.
Moreover, he said, several times UNJ received negative attention for several events that were considered to have injured the honor of the campus related to its relationship with a number of officials.
The last reason, Ubed considered that the mechanism for awarding honoris causa doctorate degrees was also neglected. He suspected that the proposal was not from UNJ’s doctoral study program which was accredited A, but from above.
“Therefore, we reject the awarding of the title of Dr. HC to the office and urge the UNJ senate that the effort to award the title to the office be canceled for the sake of the University,” he said.
Furthermore, Ubed said that the UNJ campus senate will hold a meeting to determine the re-submission for Ma’ruf and the Minister of SOEs Erick Thohir to get the honorary title on Thursday (14/10).
The news was read on the agenda for the approval of the granting of the title Dr HC which was contained in the invitation letter for the UNJ Senate meeting numbered B/3110/UN39.22/TP.01.07/2021 dated October 4, 2021.
For information, the title of Doctor Honoris Causa is an honorary degree given by a university to someone who is considered to have contributed and or done extraordinary work for science and mankind.
