Opposition parties in Chile have initiated impeachment proceedings against President Sebastian Pinera. The reason for this was the offshore data disclosed during the leak from the Pandora Papers (Pandora’s Archives).
Writes about it Reuters… The document was signed by 15 deputies from different parties.
The initiator of the procedure, Jaime Naranjo, stressed that the head of state violated the Constitution and undermined the confidence of the nation.
According to Chilean law, the impeachment issue is initially considered by a five-member parliamentary commission. If she agrees with the arguments, the question is submitted to the Chamber of Deputies.
in the Chamber of Deputies, the majority must support the impeachment for its further consideration in the Senate, where the support of two-thirds of the vote is needed, but such a number will not be gained without the support of the pro-government coalition.
Recall that the prosecutor’s office launched an investigation against Pinera after the release of data from the Pandora Papers. The documents dealt with the sale of a mining company through the firm of the president’s family.
As reported OBOZREVATEL, International Group of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) published the “Pandora’s Archives” (The Pandora Papers), which contains 12 million documents on offshore transactions and assets of more than 100 billionaires, 300 government officials and 30 world leaders, including President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky.
