Four municipalities in the region provide extra reception for refugees

The municipalities of Rotterdam, Vlaardingen, Nissewaard and Krimpen aan den IJssel will provide extra temporary shelter for refugees or status holders in their cities. In this way, the municipalities help the central government to bridge the acute shortage of reception places.

This concerns locations on cruise ships, for example, where between 50 and 70 refugees or status holders can be accommodated. Other accommodation options are also being considered.

The city of Rotterdam can accommodate just a little more thanks to a larger ship: a total of 90 people. The care is for a maximum of two months.

Little place in AZCs

Many places in the asylum seekers’ centers (AZCs) of the Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers (COA) are still ‘occupied’ by status holders – refugees with a residence permit – who are waiting for housing.

Alderman Karremans wants to prevent asylum seekers from having to stay in sports halls, just like in 2015. “That’s why we roll up our sleeves the Rotterdam way and we solve this together. I hope that more municipalities will join in the coming days.”

‘Joint responsibility’

Mayor Martijn Vroom van Krimpen aan den IJssel also hopes that more municipalities will contribute. “We have a ‘joint responsibility when it comes to the extra reception of refugees. We are currently investigating how we can best organize this in Krimpen.”

The municipality of Nissewaard wants to realize the reception in the former building of De Boeg. That is the old shelter of the Salvation Army at the Randweg on the edge of the center of Spijkenisse. It concerns a maximum of 50 status holders.

The COA has indicated that sufficient reception capacity will be available again after these two months.
