The United States government is investigating whether officials of the government of President Donald Trump took goods from the State Department intended to be gifted to foreign authorities, local press reported.
The inquiry is being handled by the State Department’s Office of the Inspector General, NBC News reported, citing unidentified officials.
The investigation was launched following a complaint by a State Department official who stated that the dollar value of the missing assets is “significant,” according to the ANSA news agency.
The missing items were identified as gift bags destined for foreign leaders at a G7 summit that was to be held last year at the Camp David presidential residence and was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Those bags included leather wallets, pewter trays and marble boxes bearing the presidential seal or the signatures of Trump and his wife, Melania.
According to the complaint, those items were removed from the State Department’s gift vault last January, in the days when Trump left the government in the hands of his successor, Joe Biden.
