Guatemala, October 12, 2021. With the aim of supporting those who live in poverty and extreme poverty in Guatemala, the Ministry of Social Development -Mides- inaugurated today a dining room in the San José del Golfo municipality of the Guatemala department.
This action responds to the commitment established in May by the President of the Republic, Alejandro Giammattei, to increase the budget of the Intervention by 100 million quetzals by 2021, in order to serve more people in conditions of food vulnerability.
Comedor Social is a program that consists of the delivery of food rations at breakfast and lunch time from Monday to Friday, allowing users to access adequate, safe and nutritious food. It is aimed at the population living in conditions of vulnerability or crisis in the face of food and nutritional insecurity situations. It prioritizes girls and boys, pregnant women, infants, the elderly, people with disabilities, and the indigenous population.
The Minister of Social Development, Raúl Romero Segura, said that food is a human right that must be addressed urgently. It is a priority for the Institution that seeks to improve the level of well-being of the population.
“The food rations are previously verified to verify that they have the basic nutrients and that the products are of high quality.”
From January to October 11, 2021, the Program has served: 2 million 993 thousand 440 food rations in the 42 dining rooms enabled until then.
