The City of Port-Cartier has taken steps to ensure that its firefighters become able to intervene in medical emergencies.
The municipality wants to implement the level 1 first responder service within its fire department.
“Level 1 would allow us to intervene to keep a person alive who has suffered a cardiopulmonary arrest or suffered an anaphylactic shock until the arrival of the paramedics”, explains the head of the Port-Cartier fire department, David Lamarre.
This service would be made available to the urban area of Port-Cartier. The goal is to be able to set everything up in winter, or spring 2022.
For the project to go ahead, an agreement must be established with the CISSS Côte-Nord. Discussions have been positive so far, says Chief Lamarre.
About 24 firefighters would be trained to be first responders. The fire department relies on a force of about thirty firefighters.
