WHO recommends third corona shot for people with weak immune systems

The World Health Organization (WHO) advises people with weak immune systems to get a third vaccination against the corona virus. Many countries, including the Netherlands, had already started doing this.
The WHO previously advised countries not to do so. The vaccines could be better shared with poorer countries that don’t have access to vaccines, the organization said.
Several studies indicate that a third shot would better protect people at higher risk of a serious disease course, especially against the Delta variant of the corona virus. The protection of most vaccines should diminish slightly after a few months. A third so-called booster shot would increase the protection.
“The recommendation is made because studies show that the number of people who contract the virus despite vaccinations is highest in this group,” said WHO director Kate O’Brien.
