Self-determined presentation on the Internet: Tips and workshops for girls on everything to do with online life
Vienna (OTS) – Always online. Always available. A life without a smartphone, tablet and online services like Snapchat, Instagram, YouTube and WhatsApp is difficult to imagine for many of us. The internet has changed our lives a lot. Digitization brings a lot of positive things, but it also has downsides – such as sexism or hate on the internet.
For World Girls’ Day on October 11th, the City of Vienna’s women’s service is publishing a new brochure “Girls on the Net II – A Guide to Self-Determined Online Identity”. As a continuation of the brochure “Girls on the Net”, this time it is again about the topic of the Internet and how girls can design their online identity safely and independently.
“We all spend more and more time online. This holds many opportunities for young women, but also dangers. It is important that girls and young women are supported when they are confronted with online hatred, bodyshaming or cyberbullying. We want to encourage girls and young women to be self-determined when traveling online. The new brochure helps girls do this, ”says Vice Mayor and City Councilor for Women Kathrin Gaál. And: “Especially on World Girls’ Day, it is important to encourage girls to strengthen their self-confidence. Girls should be able to live safely and independently in our city – whether at school, in everyday life or on the Internet. The message is: trust yourself to do everything. The world belongs to girls! ”Says Gaál.
The new brochure focuses on online identity, which is part of everyday life for many girls and young women and accompanies three friends who are active on social media through their everyday lives. Bodyshaming, their own self-image online, data security and grooming (targeted contact between adults and minors) occupy the protagonists in their online lives, among other things.
The brochure can be ordered free of charge from Frauenservice Wien or is online at www.frauen.wien.at ready for download.
