Extinction Rebellion starts week full of protest actions in The Hague

Climate activists block intersections near the temporary House of Representatives building in The Hague. They sit on the road carrying banners and signs with texts such as ‘Procrastination is not an option’ and ‘This road has a dead end’.

The climate action group previously announced that it would hold protests in The Hague throughout the week, including by blocking the intersection between the temporary House of Representatives and the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate. The campaigners want to encourage the government to do more to make the Netherlands climate neutral by 2025.

Disruptive actions

Some meetings have been announced at the municipality, but there will also be so-called “disruptive actions”, according to the organization. The Hague announced earlier this week that it would allow the demonstrations, provided that action is taken within the rules. This means that protesters are not allowed to block roads and intersections or climb or deface buildings.

An estimated 200 to 300 people are present at the protest rally today. Some activists have chained themselves to a rented truck parked at an intersection. A crossing was also blocked with a boat. He was soon removed by the police.

Many officers are present at the demonstration.
