Indigenous Peoples’ Day began in 1792 as an Italian-American holiday, and President Franklin D. Roosevelt declared the national holiday in 1937. Since then it has been known as “Columbus Day”, “Day of race” and, on Friday, President Biden proclaimed it “Indigenous Peoples Day.” And, then as now, it is still a federal holiday. That means that many businesses and government services will be closed. What will be open and what will not?
