Such submarines will now be more stealthy than ever and roam the Pacific amid rising tensions between China and the US.
Chinese President Xi Jingping recently renewed calls for Taiwan to become part of China, deploying hundreds of warplanes into the island’s airspace for the fourth day in a row.
Despite China’s efforts to reduce the noise of the Type 094 submarine, a report by submarine experts Eric Genevelle and Richard W. Stirn said the vessel may still be too loud or noisy to approach US shores undetected.
Zhou Chenming, an academic at the Yuan Wang Institute of Military Science and Technology in Beijing, said the ship’s latest developments were not related to rising tensions with the US.
He told South China Morning Post, Sunday (10/10/2021): “Building for commissioning a submarine can take up to eight years, while electronics and many advanced components will advance several generations in this period.”
“China’s navy will require shipbuilders to attach the most advanced facilities to the next hull, while sub engineers will need to figure out how to place those components in the right places. All of this may require changes to the hull design involving dimensions, sails, steering, number of bending holes and other factors.”
