Mark Hamill Confirms ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ Rumor

For a long time we heard the rumor that the film Star Wars: The Force Awakens would open with a shot of Luke Skywalker’s severed hand floating through space. That turns out not to have been a rumor, but simply the truth.

Actor Mark Hamill confirms that rumor. With that, we’ve got the man who, of course, could know this.

Original plan
Originally it was supposed to be Star Wars: The Force Awakens with a shot of Luke’s severed hand. In that hand we would still see the lightsaber.

And that turns out to be true. How exactly that hand would have ended up in space is not entirely clear, nor is it clear why he was still holding the lightsaber.

Interestingly, we would see the hand burn through a planet’s stratosphere. The flesh and bone of Luke’s hand would burn away, but the lightsaber burned through the planet.

Presumably at that point the lightsaber will have ended up on the planet Takodana, then in Maz Kanata’s chest.
