A Ryanair plane had to abort its landing last night after a car drove through the fence around the German airport Weeze. Emergency services turned out en masse because an attack at the airport just across the border at Venray was taken into account, but the driver turned out to have become unwell.
A 59-year-old man from Kevelaer had been driving under the influence of the road next to the runway when he lost control of the vehicle. After driving through the gate, he was brought to a halt on a taxiway by airport security services.
The landing of a Ryanair flight from Rome was canceled as a precaution because of the incident. A reporter from the WDR station on board reported that the plane circled several times and then diverted to Münster airport. After refueling there, the aircraft was able to land at Weeze later in the evening.
