Steven Zuber and substitute Christian Fassnacht scored in each half-time injury, after the Northern Irishmen were left with 10 men due to the expulsion of defender Jamal Lewis.
Switzerland reached 11 points, while Italy has 14 and a much better goal difference. Northern Ireland has five units, the same as Bulgaria, defeated 3-1 against Lithuania, which added its first units.
