During the last practice, but also in Q1 and Q2, Sergio Perez was in good shape. He seemed to be able to stay close to the Mercedes drivers and teammate Max Verstappen, but in Q3 he had to give in half a second to the Dutchman.
In conversation with Ziggo Sports the Mexican admits he expected more from qualifying. “Yes, we were very close all weekend. We had lost a set of soft tires so in Q3 I only had one new set of the red rubber.”
“On the old tires I first drove a bankerlap and that was a pretty good round. On the new tires we suddenly had a lot of understeer, so we didn’t improve. So yes… my Q3 on new tires was not good”, he explains the disappointing result.
Still, Perez is motivated for Sunday’s race, in which he hopes to score a lot of points. “I’m looking forward to pick myself up from P6 and score as many points as possible on Sunday. It’s a very long race here. Overtaking is possible because tire degradation will be high. There is still plenty to play for on Sunday .”
