The political clash ignites just over a week before the ballot. TO Roma the game is very open and therefore the two candidates will play it until the last vote. In the past few hours a storm has broken out against Enrico Michetti, which ended up at the center of the controversy for an article (entitled “Doers by chance or by interest?”) written in February 2020 on the Radio Radio website. His piece was about the Shoah: the center-right candidate for mayor wondered why the same pity and the same consideration are not addressed to the victims of sinkholes and other massacres.
“Perhaps because they did not own banks and did not belong to lobbies capable of deciding the fate of the planet“, had been his strong consideration. However, Michetti’s clarification came immediately, that he considers the Shoah”unique in its inhumanity“. That is to say “the lowest point in history“He therefore urged to keep the attention threshold always high, precisely to prevent episodes of anti-Semitism from recurring.
“Remembering other tragedies in history does not add or take anything away from the Holocaust which represents a unicum that must help us reflect and act against all forms of racism and discrimination. We need to focus on memory education“, observed the candidate of the center-right.
The lunge of Gualtieri
It was not long to wait for the position of Roberto Gualtieri, who judges the words of his opponent “very serious“since they risk echoing”dangerous anti-Semitic prejudices“. The Democratic Party mayoral candidate believes”unsettling“the fact that Michetti called back”delusional theories about lobbies and banks“. The attack also went Carlo Calenda, leader of Action: “This article is much more serious than the usual nonsense about Rome. Repeating the clichés of anti-Semitism is not tolerable“.
Then came the answer of Paolo Trancassini, according to which the instrumental accusations of the left show blatantly how the Democratic Party is seriously afraid of losing in the ballot round in Rome. The deputy of Brothers of Italy invited the red side to distance themselves “from those antagonists we find on the left who promote true hatred of the Jewish people“.
Michetti’s challenge
Michetti, however, does not want his closeness and friendship towards the Jewish people to be questioned: “I have always condemned abominations in an absolute way as can be found in all my previous declarations: the racial laws, the holocaust, as well as the slave trade, and every other form of abomination against human beings marks the lowest point of history of man“.
In this sense he launched a proposal to Gualtieri of the Democratic Party. The candidate for mayor of the center-right in the FdI share said he was ready to sign – together with the lists that support him – an appeal in support of the State of Israel, considered “bulwark of democracy in the Middle East“. So he asked Gualtieri and the lists that support him”if they are ready to do the same“.
