Women with ALS Laughter, Even though they want to be euthanized tomorrow

Bogota

What will you do when the day of your death is near? Martha Sepúlveda Camp spent the rest of her time on earth drinking beer and laughing with those closest to her a few days before being put to death.

Martha will be the first Colombian to receive euthanasia in a non-lethal condition. According to the schedule, the execution will be carried out tomorrow, Sunday (10/10/2021).

By that day, there was no sadness or fear that haunted his mind. “From a spiritual point of view, I’m very calm,” the 51-year-old told local TV station Noticias Caracol as quoted by NBC News.

Martha was interviewed while enjoying a beer and food at a restaurant. His son, Federico Redondo Sepúlveda, accompanied him. Their conversation was full of jokes and laughter even though death awaited Martha.

In 2019, he was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). This disease attacks the nervous system so that it interferes with body mobility.

Over time, his health condition worsened to the point of paralyzing his movement. To walk alone, he had to be helped by someone else.

“When I had it, I felt the only best option was to rest,” Martha said of her reason for undergoing the euthanasia procedure.

Colombia is the first Latin country to legalize lethal injection. However, the procedure is only allowed for patients with terminal illnesses.

On July 22, Colombia’s Constitutional Court passed a revised rule regarding who is entitled to receive euthanasia. As a result, lethal injection eventually also applies to ‘patients who suffer from intense physical or mental impairment as a result of serious and incurable bodily injury or illness.’

Four days later, Martha applied for permission to undergo the euthanasia procedure. On August 6, he received approval from the government. “I’m calmer after my application is approved. I laugh often and sleep better,” he said.

Martha’s extended family is said to be very supportive of her decision, except for her mother for religious reasons. “But I believe, deep down in his heart, he really understands my situation,” he said.

Even though it’s legal, lethal injection is still a matter of controversy in Colombia, given that the population is predominantly Roman Catholic. In the eyes of the church, euthanasia is considered a ‘serious offense’ because it opposes the Creator’s power as the determinant of life.

“I understand that God is the owner of this life. Everything happens with His permission,” said Martha, who claimed to have discussed this decision with her pastor. On the other hand, he believes that God is behind his decision to be put to death.
