Dangers of Excessive Vitamin D Consumption

Taking too much vitamin D can actually be toxic to the body. Trigger hypercalcemia

JAKARTA Vitamin D has become a popular vitamin since the COVID-19 pandemic. Besides being good for bone health, this vitamin that can be obtained from sunlight also has benefits for the immune system. The reason is due to the discovery of vitamin D receptors on almost all cells in the immune system.

This is supported by an analysis conducted by the British Medical Journal (BMJ) in 2017, which found that vitamin D can reduce the risk of acute respiratory infections in those who take daily or weekly vitamin D supplements.

However, consuming excess vitamin D is also known to be not good for the body. Researchers at Harvard Medical School discovered the potential dangers of consuming too much vitamin D.

In his research involving more than 25 thousand participants in the United States, they used vitamin D and Omega-3 to find out whether there are health benefits from consuming them in excess. The results show that consuming excess vitamin D can be toxic to the body.

Taking too much vitamin D can lead to hypercalcemia. Namely, a condition in which too much calcium is formed in the blood and begins to form deposits in blood vessels and soft tissues.

Symptoms vary, ranging from nausea, vomiting, weakness, to kidney failure. This condition occurs in those who take vitamin D supplements in high doses for a long time.

“While it is clear that vitamin D and calcium are very important for bone health, high doses of vitamin D have no benefits for bones and can have harmful effects,” said JoAnn E. Manson, Professor of Women’s Health at Harvard Medical School, who led the study. quoted from Cambridge News.

He continued, consuming high doses of vitamin D also makes elderly women more prone to falls and fractures. In addition, consuming excess vitamin D for more than three years also showed no changes in bone and even reduced bone density.

For consumption of vitamin D alone is recommended around 600 to 1000 IU. Vitamin D can be obtained from sunbathing or eating foods that contain vitamin D such as salmon, cod liver oil, mackerel, and white mushrooms.

Meanwhile, the level of vitamin D in the blood itself to be declared safe is at levels of 40 to 80 ng/ml per day. Above 100 ng/ml is feared to be harmful to the body. Some experts even say that vitamin D levels above 150 ng/ml can cause kidney stones.
