Sports plane crashes in Westerschelde, pilot remains unharmed

At the end of the afternoon, a sports plane crashed into the Western Scheldt near Ossenisse in Zeeland. The pilot was uninjured, says the Royal Dutch Rescue Company (KNRM).

The plane was en route from Antwerp to Midden-Zeeland Airport in Arnemuiden when it ran into problems over the Western Scheldt. The plane crashed and overturned, reports Broadcasting Zeeland. According to the KNRM, passing ships saw the accident and raised the alarm.

“Among other things, lifeboat Jan van Engelenburg of the KNRM and patrol vessels of Rijkswaterstaat and the water police rushed to the spot. It turned out that the wreck was still floating”, writes the rescue service.

The pilot managed to free himself from the plane under his own power. He didn’t need medical attention. The exact cause of the accident is unknown. The KNRM and the coast guard were unable to tell ANP news agency whether the sports aircraft was experiencing engine problems or whether the crash had another cause.

Rijkswaterstaat has salvaged the plane.
