Jakarta –
Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) or antimicrobial resistance can be experienced due to misuse antibiotics, Mother. AMR occurs when germs in the body can no longer respond to medications, making the infection difficult to treat.
The general chairman of the Indonesian Infection Control Association (PERDALIN), Prof. DR. Hinky Hindra Irawan Satari, dr., Sp.A(K), M.Trop.Paed, said that AMR is a bacterium that is as bad as COVID-19. Unfortunately, many people are still not focused on preventing AMR.
“AMR can cause long treatment and a lot of needed drugs, so the costs can be doubled. This is the biggest challenge for public health after COVID,” Hindra said in a statement. Virtual Media Briefing via Zoom, Thursday (7/10/21).
The World Health Organization (WHO) states that AMR is one of the top 10 health problems global threat to humanity. Multisectoral cooperation is needed to prevent this.
Hindra also explained that the unwise use of antibiotics could be a triggering factor for AMR and this is very common in developed and developing countries. In addition, the use of more than one type of antibiotic and for a long time, is often one of the triggering factors for resistance.
“The wrong or excessive use of antibiotics is the main trigger for drug resistance to pathogens or antibiotics,” he said.
The spread of microbes can be caused by sanitation problems and lack of clean water, as well as inadequate infection prevention and control. Some of these are antimicrobials that become resistant to treatment.
Antibiotics are actually very necessary in the treatment of certain diseases. However, its use should not be arbitrary because it can increase the risk of drug resistance.
“Antibiotics are an important discovery when administered wisely,” said Hindra.
