Sebastian Kurz under suspicion of corruption: Bought coverage?

Whe would have thought that Karin Kneissl’s testimony would be one of the most interesting of the Ibiza investigation committee, in which otherwise a lot of empty straw was threshed? Kneissl, that was the foreign minister of the former ÖVP-FPÖ government who achieved dubious celebrity with a wedding dance with Vladimir Putin. She had little to report on Ibiza in the true sense of the word, but she said what priorities she had found in her budget when she took office in 2017. Kneissl came as an outsider, the FPÖ had nominated her as non-party.

According to Kneissl, 1.8 million euros per year were earmarked for advertisements. She has cut it by 80 percent because she has no legal basis on which administrative authorities would have to finance private media companies. But she had to withstand pressure to exhaust the advertising budget in order to “buy goodwill” and avoid negative reporting. Heinz-Christian Strache, the then FPÖ chairman, pushed. As is well known, Strache was later to stumble upon the secretly recorded Ibiza video, on which, among other things, he disparaged journalists as whores and saw reporting as for sale.
