Is period pain a valid reason to miss school? British father’s petition has already reached 60,000 signatures

Marcus Alleyne, a father of three, called his 13-year-old daughter’s high school, Izzy, to report her as sick. He did this because Izzy had been feeling unwell all night with menstrual cramps. When the school learned that it was menstrual pain, they registered her as illegally absent.

Marcus was so shocked by this that he started a petition with the British Department of Education to ensure that girls with menstrual complaints can stay at home legally. “My wife and I wondered why this was grounds for an unauthorized absence when it should be acknowledged,” Marcus told a British newspaper.
